Dr. Maureen Miruka, CARE USA (based in Kenya) Maureen Miruka is the Team Leader, Pathways Program at CARE USA and currently based in Nairobi Kenya. Maureen is leading a dynamic team implementing CARE USA’s Women in Agriculture Program, a cornerstone program in CARE that seeks to enhance the scale of high quality women responsive agriculture programming within the organization and to contribute to the global discourse that surrounds women and agriculture. It works with 52,000 poor women smallholder farmers and their households in six countries (Mali, Ghana, Tanzania, Malawi, Bangladesh and India) and is guided by a theory of change focused on five change levers: increased capacity and skills of women smallholders; expanded access to services, assets, and inputs; increased productivity; greater influence over household decisions; and a more enabling environment for gender equity, both within communities and in extension and market systems. Previously, she worked as Senior Technical Advisor for Sustainable Agriculture at CARE and Principal Researcher at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute. Long experience and interests in gender and women’s empowerment in agriculture based livelihoods. She holds a PhD on Natural Resources, University of Greenwich, London UK.
